There are some other threads about this already, it seems to be down to what the US tax authorities require from MM as its his website hosting all their stores.
It's not just Obama - finding ways to make tax revenue off the internet has been giving governments all over the world raging hard-ons for decades now. Unfortunately for us, it's not the Mutant Registration act for Wammers, but it's still going to decimate our grassroots wam community. Worst part is, no matter how you slice it, you can't comply *or* fight it without outing yourself as a wammer in print, and very few people are going to do that.
Thing is, other outfits find tax loopholes all the time. We're a smart crew around here; Why did we get so badly caught w/ our collective pants down? Surely someone has an idea or 2.
Shit, set up a server in the Caymans or something.Think.
I didn't know Bruce Jenner was so into WAM he has 3 user accounts (Jinxguy1000, Jedi Knight, not a good name).
Seriously what does Bruce Jenner have to do with this. Yes I am a CD but I'm not trans in any way. I assume this was an attempt to criticize anyone who is against your assumably leftist ideology. I'm ok with being criticized but at least keep it relevant.
People who were hiding their income from the government are no longer able to do that on this site anymore. UMD now requires producers to have their tax info on file. Personally I am glad this change was made because people who try to evade taxes are scum bags.

Looks like the thread was removed but there was some controversy there. Long story short, some of the other wam models criticized her for pricing her customs too low. She didn't take kindly to that and left.

Actually it was more of problem with the name of payor on the 1099 then hiding it. The name makes it obvious that its from a clip store or porn website. If it was called some thing like "officemedia" or some thing like that it would be a little less obvious.

I'm a Canadian who was purchasing online vids from mostly British producers. The USA should NOT be involved here, nor are they owed any taxes. But I do understand that MM is in the USA and subject to the laws of that country.
I also wrote a book and had it for sale on a USA based website. They took it down because I did not go to my 'nearest USA tax office' to fill in some form. The USA tax department is getting too pushy with sales from other countries. I can go on eBay and purchase from any country, including the USA, and not have to pay taxes. Maybe they are going after the little guys to squeeze more money out. As for 'trying to evade taxes' that is an entirely different case. No tax money is owed to the American Government on sales from other countries. We have enough of our own taxes to pay to our own governments.
A lot of the stores that are closing up shop are some of the many who were diluting the forum with amateur, cheap priced videos, thus making it more difficult for the bigger budgeted producers. Very ironic.
The privacy and Loverbuns LLC name are the main reasons why I'm choosing to close. That combined with a general lack of explanation on the site owner's part after posting a pretty generic, "Hey, we need this or you'll need to close your store" just didn't sit well with me.
As far as some people claiming pretty bluntly that I'm trying to hide my income, that's just stupid and insulting, frankly. I've always declared what I've made off my video sales here in my 'additional income' area of my 1099 form. So I don't consider myself a scumbag, but thanks for the thought, LeilaHazlett.

I find the fact that YOU are calling out amateur producers the REAL irony
Ok, Angrypieguy, ShavingCreamGuy, Flyonthewall, O'toole, JHub, (or whatever names you've trolled with over the years), whatever you say.

I haven't claimed taxes on the $40 or so in sales I've had in my store. I'm a terrible person. Uncle Sam desperately needs that couple bucks...
I don't understand why a lot of this can't be solved by Messmaster just changing the official corporate name of the UMD so it isn't so blatantly obvious that it's something sexual.

I think I speak for a vast majority of users here who would rather see amateur videos from people kind enough to share their personal lives with us, than the racist "big budget" shit you produce.

Hobby income. Not a business. So deductions are limited to the revenue you make. Include the $40 in income and $100 in expenses then there's something that caps it at equal to income. All done.
I have a business. I'm losing money but I'm opening up new areas of revenue. So I deduct the entire loss. There is some limit as to how long a movie production company can lose money but 3 years is certainly reasonable. 7 might be pushing it but there are ways to capitalize and then amortize a portion to spread the loss out into the future when you have more business income (or less expenses ).

And that answers most questions.
Plus if we are honest we have to admit that once they get involved in doing it they begin to realize how much work it is for a fairly small "reward." It's different doing things when you want to vs. HAVING to do them to meet a schedule or make a profit.
Has nothing to do with Obama or taxes or anything else in MOST cases.
P.S. My accountant STILL won't ask me what my "supplies" were for in my yearly deductions. To quote her..."I do NOT want to know"
Have to agree, there is virtually no profit margin unless you are a model producing your own films so the avoiding tax issue should not be a problem. We've closed for a number of reasons, we've loved doing what we do but now losing our studio has made it difficult to continue. We also wanted to remove a lot of the nude / topless videos for other reasons and go back to where we started with Dunk Tank Babes and wetlook slapstick comedy.

Temper, Temper, Cooper. I see your store was one of the ones that closed up shop as well. Tough break!
There is a lot of speculation as to why people are closing stores on UMD, I can’t speak for others but my decision was the result of a whole combination of things, and certainly no fault can be attached to any actions of messmasters.
I have had a bit of health problem that has prevented me from producing new content for quite a while, it is stress related and is the reason I am retiring from my fulltime business, it is coincidence that my inactivity also occurred with a drop in download sales generally. Believe me there is nothing like organising and shooting a three girl messy video all on your own for winding up your stress levels.
Now some time ago I posted in the store owners forum some of my correspondence with the UK governments non elected quango ATVOD regarding their view of the legal classification of downloaded content. Most of us that read the replies to my questions conclude that it is a load of bollocks, and probably not enforceable but until some individual with very deep pockets decides to take this bunch on and wipe the floor with them, it remains the law.
Since that time we have had the posts from Dungeonmaster on the new EU wide VAT requirements. Then the banning of certain content from fetish videos by ATVOD. Just recently news stories that the Conservative party intend to introduce a requirement for adult websites to have an age verification system to prevent children having access (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-26779639 & http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-32180744 )
Also you may like to read this blog by a UK female porn producer and activist Pandora Blake ( http://dreamsofspanking.com/blog/2015/4/the-first-letter ), she has raised her profile, and made herself a trophy for ATVOD to bag, but she is not a big producer by any means.
I recently had a bit of a scare that made me suspect that ATVOD may have been trying to find my real identity, it seems that I may have been wrong, but it spooked me at the time.
Now messmaster recently asked us if we would fill in some US IRS forms for his business records, I don’t have an issue with messmaster knowing my real name and address. However, I don’t know much about the US IRS. My concern is should messmaster ever be audited would my details be available to the IRS, and if that happened could they end up in UK HMRC files and finally ATVOD. I just do not know, and I am not prepared to take the risk, I may be paranoid, but I remain an anonymous paranoid.
In pondering all these various factors, I have come to the conclusion that it is time to close the UMD store, possibly permanently, but if I find a way to return to shooting health wise and can do so in a way that retains my anonymity, I may return. There is one blessing to getting older you get more devious and crafty by the day.
As to this post by Leila Hazlett "People who were hiding their income from the government are no longer able to do that on this site anymore. UMD now requires producers to have their tax info on file. Personally I am glad this change was made because people who try to evade taxes are scum bags." she is dead right, but that is world of difference between evasion and avoidance.
I only started this as a bit of fun not a serious income stream, I have a full time business but also set up the messy videos as a “Sole Trader”, My accountant and I make sure I claim for every business expense that can reasonably be justified. So the messy videos have always made a loss, but I claim that loss against my overall personal tax bill, and so should any of you contemplating opening a store, whether your self employed or on PAYE .
Your accountancy fees can be worth paying for the advice on what you can claim as reasonable expenses, just be meticulous at keeping receipts. It amuses the anarchist in me to think that in a way the government subsidises my fetish.
We're living in a time of more amateur and television WAM moments unparalleled in history. There is just so much of each out there. We have access to foreign shows and Brazil in particular is pumping out weekly pie scenes which are outstanding. And it's all free. That's got to be a factor on some level.
Other than that, I do find it interesting that a man can come out as a Transgender and as a Republican on the same day and the outcry was hatred and vitriol... over his political beliefs.
Times are a changing, I guess. Call me old school but I like my liberals tolerant of others beliefs instead of these modern day aggressive neo-Liberal types. Pee-yew.
