So Sam's Club sells buttercream in bulk buckets around my part of the world and my question is... has anyone tried using a paint mixing attachment for a power drill to whip the frosting? Just curious how it turned out.
You might want to ask Jayce. Either she or Jilly used to have a drill-mixer called Cake Fucker 5000, but I'm pretty sure they used that to mix gunge instead of frosting.
Given how much torque a good drill can put out, I'd think that it SHOULD work, but I wouldn't want you to burn out a drill motor on my word.
That buttercream is awesome. A standard mixer is good enough for a bowlful. I'm not sure a paint mixer will whip enough air into it, but I could be wrong.
No, As WAMlanta says, it won't whip enough air into it. Paint mixers stir. You'd need to fabricate a spherical attachment with very thin wire blades. A giant whisk.
I've used it. It's great for sensual sessions where you want to cut the buttercream with some liquid. But as someone said, it doesn't introduce any air into the cream so it won't fluff it up for you if stiff pies were your aim.
I used a metal mortar/paint mixing attachment - the one that looks like a giant kitchen mixer piece. I still have a smaller plastic paddle attachment - one that's got some angled blades. That might do the trick, but I couldn't tell you yet.

The more I see and hear about all the contraptions, devices and tools created to optimise wam substances and deliver them to the intended target; the more I think that the thing a great wam producer needs above all else is DIY skills!
I was thinking that it wouldn't work that well but I thought it might have a chance given how fast a drill can spin the paint mixing attachment. I have scooped some out and used out kitchen aid go fluff it up but to do a whole bucketful takes a while so I was looking for a short cut. I'll have to see if I can find some sort of whisk looking thing I can attach to my drill for now. Thanks for clearing this up for me!
