I knew someone (an American) who fought in WWII, who's name was Adolf. That must have been hard! Everyone called him "Duff". I often wondered if that was why?

Or was. I don't know if you can condemn a first name because someone infamous in history had it.
I'm sort of guessing, but I'll bet a lot fewer Germans named their kids "Adolf" after WWII ! And remember, a lot of Germans (and Austrians) didn't like Hitler, but they were forced to do what he wanted, and to fight for him. The kids were taught in school to tell the authorities if their parents or anyone they knew spoke ill of the 3rd Reich.

Growing up I had a neighbor named Adolf who everyone just called "Bud". I wondered how Bud came out of Adolf...it turned out that was his nickname simply because his last name was Wiser (and maybe because of the whole hitler thing too)
