This isn't the shot I used for the edit. (I went with a different angle that starts later, and sped up slightly for comedic effect.) But as a tiny behind-the-scenes glimpse, it's fantastic. Can't decide what I like more: The last-minute "adjustment" or that nervous smile right before she dives in.....
I love a good cake fall, but for it to truly be slapstick, she needs to appear to actually slip and fall instead of diving in on purpose.
Here's how I'd shoot it: Section 1: Wide shot of girl carrying cake and tripping or slipping on something (but not falling yet). Section 2: Close shot of her wide eyed surprise as she begins to fall (but doesn't actually fall to the ground, so no dangerous stunts) Section 3: Wide ground shot of her already on her knees and actively falling into the cake as if she had fallen from section 1 (if she's already moving forward when this section starts, we can believe that it was all one fall) Section 4: Close ground shot of her pushing her face up out of the cake, reacting with shock and embarrassment with her mouth in an open O. Continue shot when her hands naturally slip out to the sides and she falls back into the cake. Repeat. Section 5: Wide ground shot of her kicking her legs in a tantrum because she can't seem to escape her humiliating predicament.

Agreed, which is why I specifically said THIS is a BTS shot, but....

In the final edit, everything you mention happens (except for Section 2). Not my first rodeo!
