Clear / transparent gunge works well in specific situations too, but gives a different effect, more like "thick water" than the bright colourful gloop most of us think gunge should usually look like.
Other more esoteric choices can also work, but require a bit more thought in use.
My preferences are strong bold colours. Really not into the glass effect as prefer a good deluge of gunge to cover facial features. Red is a bit of a turn off as resembles blood too much
And now that I think about it, I don't know if it would be physically possible, but spraying a model in a striped maxi dress with a gunge gun that does different colors like those toy pens so that each stripe gets hit with a different color.
I'm glad to read I'm not the only one who has an irrational dislike for red. But yeah for me the tier list goes:
S Tier: Green in all it's iterations A Tier: Bright/Neon Pink, blue, purple, yellow, orange, etc. B Tier: flat colors same as above, white, clear C Tier: Black, brown D Tier: Red F Tier: Nothing, it's gunge ain't it?

That would work. The "gunge blasters" you see people use (we have one) you just dip the end in a bucket and suck the gunge up before firing it out again. Set up multiple coloured buckets, then pick and chose your weapon.
More generally, I like the light, bright stuff. A little bit of dark in with a lot of light can be fun to add contrast. Have to think about what the colours mix to as well, as it's usually destined to be brown if all colours are used.

Just had a wam fashion idea-
A scene where someone in a white dress or something gets sprayed with fabric paint to make a pattern or something, and then a sequel where they get messy in the dress again.
