I had trouble viewing MP4 videos purchased from some of our fellow UMD stores - lots of breakups, static, freezes, etc. using the standard viewers. I googled (don't we all?) and discovered an open source viewer that's excellent and works with every format. Google "K-Lite Codec Pack 13.4.3 Standard" - the viewer comes packaged with the codec pack, so just download the pack. You may not see an icon, but if you click "open with" on the saved video, you'll see the new viewer as a choice. It's free - and I have absolutely no connection with the company.

I've never had a problem with VLC, personally - it's what I'd recommend. Again, it's free and I have no connection.
I know the problem. Windows Media Player sucks because it does not play all the file formats and recognize all codecs. I was using VLC player for years but it is a very basic player and has lousy controls....and then GOM Player came along and was far far better than VLC player.....but then GOM Player became lousy because their later revisions included adware and other annoying things...so I searched around for other open source players and then tried KM Player....which was OK....until I found the best player with the best controls for playing videos....which is POT PLAYER.....so give Pot Player a try....it can play every format and codec and the controls are great. ...e.g. you can quickly scan back and forth by holding down the arrow keys. Here is the free download....
I'll take a look at Potplayer (I know there's a joke in there somewhere....) - sounds like a winner. Normally I use VLC for viewing vids (despite it's quirks), but the vids that I'd purchased from the UMD seller wouldn't play properly there - the audio was great and played straight through, but the video itself froze after a few seconds. Tried changing the VLC video and audio default variables with no luck. Still in all, it's preferable to almost all of the other standard viewers!
I should have said.....I have no connections to Pot Player at all,,,,I wish I did....,cos if I were that smart enough to have a stake in a high tech company I would be making a fortune in the tech industry instead of making silly wam videos that sell for peanuts that don't even generate more than a crew member earns at McDonalds...ha ha

You should be complaining to the clip producer. It's pretty easy to select the wrong settings when rendering a video. Could be a buggy encoding job. You shouldn't have to jump through a bunch of hoops to play the video you paid for. A properly encoded clip using a modern codec and a universal file wrapper should play on pretty much anything.
How long is the video and how many megabytes is it? Maybe the data rate is just too high for your computer to handle.
