when it comes to getting enough cakes for making a good mess, whats better buying them whole and saving them for later in the freezer or buying a cake box and making it your self
While baking can be a pain in the ass I've found that most store made cakes just don't work very well with wam. The cake to filling ratio is just not ideal

I stopped using major brand store cakes and pies and only do small.bakery/custom ones. The big brands put something on the cream to make it hold up longer and it impacts how well it sticks. However, a store.boughy sheet cake like from Costco with a healthy amount of cool whip or frosting added afterwards is magical.
I'd go for shop-bought just because it saves a vast amount of time. It's very easy to underestimate just how long wam preparation can take, and making cakes takes serious time.
For sitting on we buy the cheapo frozen double chocolate, and black forest, gateaux from the big supermarkets, store them in the freezer till it's time to play, and then try and remember to take them out at least six hours in advance so they've thawed to a delicious sloppy consistency before a nicely-clothed bottom gets willingly lowered into them. Squelch!
Opening one, and taking it out of the plastic inner container, takes about 4 minutes per gateaux so if we plan to use a lot of them that can soon add up - it would be 40 minutes for ten.
For WAM purposes, it's all about how soft the sponge is and how much frosting and/or cream the cake has on it. Nobody likes a cake that's dry and heavy, as it won't be sticky or gooey, and will just crumble apart in a very dull way. Cakes like that are no fun for anyone and you'll just be left wondering why anyone actually enjoys sitting on them.
Unless you're an excellent baker, the likelihood is that your home-made sponge is going to be fairly dry, or if deliberately left unbaked fully, then it could be too sloppy to hold up as a decent cake. For this reason, I selected "shop bought".
Obviously, you have to be careful what shop bought cakes you purchase - not all are made equal by any means (in fact many make for poor WAM choices) - avoid the themed party cakes as these are usually very stodgy and dry and have sheet icing on that won't even break under the weight of a human butt. Sitting on them is unspectacular and you can't even begin to think about putting one in someone's face - it'd hurt!
Instead, go for one of the following (not sure what is available in Australia):
- Frozen cream cakes such as Black Forest Gateaux - but make SURE they are fully defrosted prior to your session - solid cakes and a frozen butt aren't super pleasurable. If you defrost them right, they'll splat beautifully. If you can find them, Coppenrath & Wiesse make the most incredible gateauxs which are perfect for WAM, but they are notoriously difficult to come by (in the UK).
- Costco cakes - these are amazing for WAM, being large, soft and laden with frosting. They also require no defrosting! The large sheet cakes are best, but also check out their chocolate fudge cakes and anything else laden with heaps of that perfect creamy frosting. (There are some other American stores that seem to do very similar cakes. Regrettably Costco won't sell their large drums of frosting as a standalone item.)
