Hi everyone. So I've almost finished building a makeshift gunge tank that i can easily pack and hide away. Ive got to the bucket/container part and need some help or advise.
I dont own a drill, but am planning on buying a cheap one just for this project. The bucket I;m using hangs down, so it is not sitting on top of anything. I need a hole to allow gunge to flow through and I need to be able to plug the hole once the gunge is in there. I know there are many gunge tanks out there with this simple mechanism but I have some questions:
how big shall I drill the hole? how would I get the right size plug for it? I've seen some tanks that squirt the gunge outwards rather than all in one straight line. How can this be achieved?
I would use a hole at least as big as a Bathtub plug for Semi-Thin Natrosol gunge. For everything thicker I would search for something bigger.
For the "shower" effect: Stack up two buckets. The inner one with the big hole and the plug, the outer one with many tiny holes (about 0.5mm in diameter). Use a bigger Plug than a buthtub plug because the tiny holes will dampen the speed anyways.
If the hole doesn't need to be perfectly round, most plastics can be cut with a regular old box cutter or hacksaw blade. Haven't tried it with gunge but the bucket we made for Janet's dunk tank promos was just a semi round hole cut in a 5 gallon bucket and then sealed with a toilet tank flapper repair kit.
how big shall I drill the hole? Drill the smallest hole you can, fill the tank with gunge and time it going through the hole. If thats fast enough for you thats the hole you want. Want it faster... increase the hole. Stop when you are happy that the flow of the gunge you like is right.
how would I get the right size plug for it? Measure the hole you have cut. (hopefully you went up logically in whole numbers) Search eaby for "x inch bung" (where x is the size in inches of the hole you drilled)
I've seen some tanks that squirt the gunge outwards rather than all in one straight line. How can this be achieved? Fit downpipe mechanism, add obstruction in the middle toward the end.
I have decided no to continue with building a frame for the gunge tank purely because I have worked out I can hang a bucket over my bath and use the shower screen as the side of the tank. This will make setting up and cleaning up quick and easy, which is what I'm after. Plus I can easily take the bucket down and all evidence is then hidden.
I will attempt using a knife to cut a hole that will fit a standard basin plug and see how I go. If this fails, I am going to look at getting a drill and doing it properly.
I would still love to have something that I could put over/in the hole which would allow the gunge to pour out at angles as opposed to a straight stream, but be able to have a straight steam as well when i feel like it. So far I have thought of making some larger holes in a tea strainer and sticking this over the hole, or something similar. still not too sure though.
Thanks again, will try and get some pics up once done if anyone is interested.
AnonyWAM said: It should be obvious, but one reminder: remember that liquids are heavy (water is 8lb/gallon or 1kg/L, depending on your area), so a full bucket is somewhere close to 40lbs. If that falls, you WILL get hurt; make sure your frame is sturdy enough before going underneath it.
That said, have fun!
indeed!
Just type in ICE BUCKET FAIL on youtube if you need proof!
