We use five for a "standard size" general purpose bucket (the kind you'd use to wash your car). I'd imagine you'd need upwards of 15 or more. Maybe even 20. Depending on whatever kind of sale your local grocery store has, it might be worth checking a Cash n Carry. That's where restaurants buy a lot of their stuff and I've seen 30 and 50 lb bags of white and chocolate cake mix in the past. It's not that much cheaper than my local grocery store, if at all, but it beats the ass pain of dealing with so many individual boxes and bags. Get yourself a 3/8" mortar mixer for your corded drill and go to town. Keep in mind too that adding color to that much cake mix and mixing it until it's an even color can be.....trying. I'd consider mixing one or two gallon buckets with color, adding them to the big bucket, then giving it one final swirl with the drill for good measure.
Good Lord. If I was this technical, deliberate, and savvy with my cars and my retirement savings......
As an aside: are you sure you want to use a 5-gallon bucket? I mean that not in the amount of mess you're using, but in the size of the container. Once you fill that thing up, it'll weigh at least 35 pounds.
It usually takes about 5/6 boxes of cake mix for me to fill a 2 gallon bucket. Not that it's filled to the rim, but there's usually a generous amount in there (I like the mix to be as thick as possible - not too lumpy, but not too watery either).
I bought about 12 packs of cake mix a few months ago and I had about 2-2 gallon buckets worth of cake batter. I would suggest doing that instead of having just 1 bucket if you want to get really messy, as 5 gallons worth is going to be insanely heavy to lift.
For a 5 gallon bucket you'll need 15 boxes to get something thick, and around 10 for something a bit more runny. Buy 15 and add the other 5 if you want something thicker.

Agreed! A 5 gallon bucket of water is hard enough to lift over your head without spilling it, let alone one full of cake batter.
