How do I narrow the search? It seems like the more individual words I put in the search, the more videos pop up. I'm trying to be more specific but I seem to get more possibilities.
You can also use quotation marks. For example "pie in the face" should only return videos with pie in the face in the title or in the caption. It's called putting things in string. Using AND (yes it does need to be in caps I believe) and NOT (also in caps) to narrow your search will help. Would also be nice if people stopped using WAM phrases for describing videos that have no WAM in them whatsoever.
You can also search UMD using the "site:" operator and refine the results with all those other operators as well. I've been fiddling with this for a while and found that this method yields a lot of extraneous results. But many of these can be omitted by excluding the terms "forum_search_criteria" and "sortby". You still have to ignore results that don't start out with "umd.net". As an example, click the link below to see how I searched the UMD Forums for the exact phrase "blueberry pie":
You'll see in the search box that I constructed the search like so ---> site:umd.net/forums "blueberry pie" -forum_search_criteria -sortby . As of this writing, almost all of the results are good, but the third one has a "wamerica" before the "umd.net" which oddly takes you to the WAMerica download store (and no blueberry pie). Note that I used "site:umd.net/forums" to search the Forums, but you could also use "site:umd.net/sites" to search UMD's site listings.
Since MM has had a lot on his plate all year I haven't nudged him about improvements to UMD's own search functions. But maybe something like this illustration could be posted in lieu of all that bother. Was hoping to streamline it more, but I think that's as clear as I can get without getting too wordy :/
