Does anyone have any tips or first-hand experience getting messy with certain fabrics and materials, and then cleaning them, without permanently destroying them?
Specifically, I wanted to try messing with street clothes (cotton, polyester), fuzzy carpet-like fabrics (wool, shag), or probably even fetish-type gear (leather, latex, rubber, PVC).
I'm guessing, at the very least, that I should stick to less-harsh substances such as slime and shaving cream. I don't imagine thick and sticky things like peanut butter, Nutella or marshmallow fluff, or stuff that has harsh dyes, will ever clean properly.
I've also heard NEVER to use oil-based stuff on latex, rubber or PVC. Especially not on condoms.
Without any specifics, it's hard to say anything specific. So I'm going to try to talk about the science behind the substances.
Shaving cream is soap. Period. Water will disperse it.
Semi-solid foods like peanut butter have a melting point. If you use them, get over that point, and it behaves like a fluid. You could probably get away with using it on dyes fabrics, but I can't guarantee there wouldn't be discoloration. Not sure what the melting point of peanut butter and nutella are, but definitely within the range of most standard water heaters.
Dairy products are at your own risk. Simply because if you let them sit, they can go bad, and you'll never get the smell out.
Slime: Since there are so many different ways to make slime, it's hard to make any solid statements. Cloth is a series of threads woven together. You'll want your slime to be too big to fit through them or so small they fall right out with water and detergent.
Then you have to worry about discoloration. Cotton would probably be the worst at this. Everything discolors cotton. Synthetic fabrics would probably be more forgiving. I know in Splatter Island, I reuse wardrobe all the time, and I am not careful, with preparation or cleanup. The clothes don't get washed immediately, but discoloration isn't a problem.
But, then again, I'm a bit OCD, so everything is measured out, including the color. I use specifically enough to color the substance, and no more. Beyond that, you're not making your greens greener, just stainier.

Sometimes that is half the fun, though. One of the most fun outings I had (in clothes) was buying a brand new pair of white spandex shorts and shirt, then diving into the thickest, messiest mud I could find. Watching that pristine white get splattered with mud was a real turn-on. Then, they never came clean in the wash! I still wear them to work out sometimes...no one would ever know where the slight dirt colored tint is from, but it reminds me of the fun every time I see it!

Best advice would be to 'test a small patch in a hidden area'. Some things you might not think to contain oil, but they do. (shaving cream with any kind of 'skin soothing', some foods, vegetable oils, etc) And some items aren't labeled completely accurately... I have a set of black 'latex' sheets that I would swear are closer to vinyl or PVC.... they are sex and BDSM retailers, not a chemical supply house or engineering materials supplier. But in general, water based stuff is pretty safe... for accessories as well as you. In that regard, J-lube is always amazing
