So this is mostl;y just for Australian wammers, but for wamming on a budget, what filling can you use to get the most out of pies? I normally use shaving foam, except my friend can't use it.
I've tried lots of different things but ultimately I found frosting the simplest because you can use it straight out of the tub without any preparation and it doesn't go bad or start smelling if you leave it too long.
The downside is that it's oil based and floats on water so it makes the cleanup a little trickier.
I personally prefer just plain old heavy cream whipped in to real whipped cream. Its a little time consuming. But it lets me get them to just the right consistency.
Not sure what's available down under or how much it may cost, but the lady and I use pudding as filling for the majority of our pies. I've looked for a store in the Northeast that sells large cans on pudding, but I haven't had any luck, so instead we buy packs of pudding snack cups and scoop them out. We use between two and four cups per pie, depending on how crazy we're feeling. The cups are sold in packs of four for $1 USD, sometimes 90 or 80 cents. So, usually around 50 cents for filling per pie. We top that off with cool whip mixed with frosting for some extra consistency.
Besides that, we sometimes use fruit filling in a few pies, and we're considering making pies entirely out of cake batter in the future. Fruit filling is pricier though, and I haven't yet thought out the cost of batter pies.
