Vaginas & WAM - How To Have Fun While Avoiding Infections, Irritation & More

Updated: Dec 19, 2022

Contrary to popular belief in the wam community, getting sugary food substances on, in or around your vulva and vagina will not in itself cause a thrush/yeast infection. Sugar in the concentrations found in sweet foods (or any food) actually create an unfavourable environment for yeast.

It’s not the same as the usual sugar related causes you have likely heard about, which refer to high blood sugar and higher levels of sugar in sweat and other bodily fluids. Articles about the causes often mention high sugar levels, but they are referring to that specifically in the context of bodily fluids, not food.

Sugar in bodily fluid, even with raised levels, is low compared to the sugar content of most wam substances (even some savoury ones) The levels in bodily fluid can be perfect for yeast, but that's not true with food. If you add too much sugar to your bread dough, the yeast will die and it will collapse and fail.

I'm not trying to claim that sploshing will never contribute to a pussy problem, some things can definitely cause irritation which is a factor, but a lot can be done to understand and take good care of your vagina before, during and after WAM and to minimise the risk of yeast infections, irritation or even just being uncomfortable.

So it’s time there was a specific guide especially for sploshers, instead of the presumptions and incorrect advice that gets posted sometimes. I get it - sugar = thrush does seem like a logical conclusion, but about 5 years ago, after 10 years of getting sugary stuff all over and inside my vagina and never having a problem, I decided to research it. I’ve only just found time to write about it.

The Real Problem

The yeast infection problem occurs primarily with overusing soap, scrubbing, douching, over washing and medical reasons, like diabetes, irritation and injury.

Irritation is possible from prolonged contact with concentrated syrups. Sugar in high concentration is an irritant - it stings the eyes and any mucous membranes.

You may therefore find it uncomfortable if you fill your panties full of super high sugar substances like golden syrup, strawberry syrup, chocolate syrup or treacle. With prolonged contact, the resulting irritation to the membranes could cause a problem, but the sugar itself is not the direct cause. It’s the irritation, the same as if you over scrubbed the area or used harsh soaps. Or vindaloo.

How To Lessen The Risk While Sploshing

So because of the irritation factor, I wouldn’t advise panty filling with syrups - stick to lower sugar wam substances like yogurt, custard, trifle, savoury things (not spicy though!) and of course gunge/slime

How To Lessen The Risk Generally

The vagina is a self-cleaning organ that does not require special cleaning products. It does not need any cleaning products at all apart from water, not even the ones that claim to be specifically for genitals/vaginas.

At the very most, use a very small amount (less than pea sized blob) of gentle, unscented shower gel on the mons pubis. This is where most of your pubic hair is. Then gently lather up and spread a little of that to the vulva, which is the outer portion of the genitals that surrounds the entrance to the vagina. The ‘outer lips’ or outer labia in other words. Steer clear of the inner lips/ labia areas. Rinse thoroughly with plain water and pat dry.

After using the loo, always wipe front to back (front being the mons pubis side) always pee after sex and wear cotton underwear as often as possible. Tights with cotton gussets can often be found too and can help with prevention. Avoid scented sanitary pads and tampons and always keep your sex toys clean and rinsed.

Your Safest WAM Substance Bet

Methylcellulose, which is often what gunge is made of, is the top ingredient in KY Jelly, a popular sexual lubricant which is fully approved for genital use, obviously.

So if you want to take the safest panty filling/pussy wam option, gunge is your best bet.

I wouldn’t call it a close second, but certainly among the safer options is natural yogurt, which is often recommended as a way to ease thrush symptoms (it will not fully treat or stop active thrush though so, speak to a GP or pharmacist before doing that)

Douching Is Awful

Attempts to clean the vagina itself (the inside parts) with douches, soaps or similar products may cause inflammation and alter the vaginal pH - this is what leads to an imbalance and potentially a yeast infection or ‘thrush’

Other risks of vaginal cleaning methods such as douching include:

Endometritis, which is an inflammation of the lining of the uterus

Bacterial vaginosis (BV)

Yeast infections

Vaginal pain

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

And more. Nasty eh? Don't do it!

Safely Cleaning Your Vulva & Vagina After A Messy Session

To clean up your vulva and vagina after a wam or splosh session, use warm water on the outside parts only, with a very small amount of mild soap if you really feel you must. Do not rub or scrub, and do not douche or spray water internally.

If you get a messy substance inside your vagina, it will come out by itself, watered down by your own natural lubrication and cleaning fluids over the course of about 8 to 12 hours. The vagina cleans itself naturally by making mucous. The mucous washes away blood, semen, and vaginal discharge - and anything else that might be up there.

This can mean frequent knicker changing, or using panty liners and changing them regularly to stay comfortable.

That may not sound ideal, even slightly gross, but it is far better than trying to douche it out and getting a yeast infection or one of the other horrid potential problems, and means you have a way to fully enjoy genital wam and knicker filling without having to avoid the area, and miss out on all the fun.

A Little Extra Caution For Transwomen

If you are a transwoman, post op, all healed up and ready to splosh, your new vagina and vulva may not have a mucous membrane, and therefore may not be fully self cleaning. After researching the topic and speaking to a few trans friends, it seems some procedures do have a clever system of giving you those membranes. If you are not sure, ask the surgeons office which procedure you had and if mucous membranes are present (you don’t have to tell them why)

If you don’t, it just possibly means some slightly different guidelines for you. You shouldn’t have to avoid the area or miss the fun either. So if you indulge in some panty filling wam play, and get any messy wam substance actively inside you, like, way up there - I would recommend you very gently douche (water only) afterwards, then dry the area gently, and continue your dilation routine as normal. If your surgical aftercare team recommended any brands, stick with those. If you are not sure and don’t want to ask anyone, either abstain or stick with plain methylcellulose wam for intimate areas and knicker filling.

Muppet Disclaimer

Disclaimer - I am not a doctor, I’m just a muppet with a keyboard who is keen for everyone to have as much fun as possible. I love panty filling and I’ve done… um… things with mars bars and creme eggs before. I’ve also sat in a bar for hours wearing plastic pants under my clothes that were filled with cake batter.

I’ve had every wam substance imaginable in, on and around my vagina, but I’ve always followed the exact routine documented in this article (gentle, no douching, tiny amount of mild soap only on the outside, let your vagina do its thing by itself) and I’ve never had a problem - Not one.

I haven’t had thrush for over 20 years, and for ten of those years I got messy 4 to 5 times a week in private sessions and filming. I’m writing from my own vast experience - but everyone is different, and even my extensive experience is merely anecdotal and opinion.

Funnily enough, there are no peer reviewed studies to confirm that custard in your knickers doesn't give you thrush. But there IS extensive and extremely thorough evidence against irritation, soaps, douching and the like. None of this is medical advice, please do not treat it as such. Consult a medical professional with any concerns.

Concerns Or Symptoms?

If you have any medical concerns at all, please speak to your doctor, pharmacist, gynaecologist, nurse, or other health professional. If you are embarrassed, there are online services where you can message online with a registered GP. I haven’t tried any so can’t recommend, but google it if you need to.

If you already have thrush, the pharmacist will provide swift treatment over the counter, or your doctor can help too.

If you have any burning when you pee, see the GP for that as it may be cystitis or a UTI and is very simple to treat, but it’s a very good idea to check in person (they do a dip test on a urine sample)

If you have other symptoms and need STI tests, in the UK this can often be done remotely by post and by swabbing yourself - you should be able to find reputable and free services for this via your local NHS pages (apologies if you are in another country, I only know about UK services) - be careful with googling, use reputable NHS links only or go via your local GP surgery.

Conclusion

If you are in any doubt at all, just play it safe and don’t let it get up your coochie.

Gunge/methylcellulose is probably the safest option if you are worried but still want to.

Avoid syrups due to stinging/irritation.

Be gentle and do not douche or scrub when cleaning up.

Your pussy is amazing. Look after it!

See your GP, talk to a pharmacist or get an online consultation if you have any concerns.
