I think they are only related if they share the same color that isn't black, but I can see your logic. And I could be wrong, of course.

Black = Neutral/no family relation
Color = Family ties per color. So, all blues are related, all oranges are related, etc.

Looking at this, the only thing I can think about is you having a ceremony where you award Emerald status to Ellie because her downline (downslime?) is so successful. Obviously Emerald status just means she gets pummeled with Emerald green gunge.
