I recall reading up on a Hungarian springtime tradition. In olden times, young women would step out in their lightweight dresses and dance together in circles. Young men at these gatherings would express interest first by tossing buckets of water at particular girls, then by offering them perfume and other gifts. Apparently around Easter each year some communities observe a modernized version of the tradition. Celebrations in public squares have been replaced by playful ambushes, often conducted at an early hour. Chosen women are lured or even forced outside, often with their arms held apart -- a nod to the traditional dancing circles though also a way of minimizing evasions and defensive gestures -- then splashed and sprayed with water. I suspect old Europe was full of interesting traditions like this, and at least a few others linger in modern times.
