Hi all. Super quick question, and I apologise if this has already been answered but here goes.

Im off on Wednesday for some hotel based messy fun with a lovely blonde and want to try some Xanthan Gum gunge in the bath. We bought a 110g jar and what I'm wondering is on an average sized hotel bath how much water do I need to put in it for that much powder, and secondly will it dilute ok to go down the plug hole? I have fears of blocked plug holes lol. Going to be using creamy cake, yogurt and custard to so should be in for a messy time :0)

You should be able to get 7 or 8 litres out of 110g. Best thing would be to start with less water and add more to get the right gooyness ! The last thing you want is a watery mess. It should dillute down fine with plenty of water.

What is Xanthan Gum, Where can I get it, how muce is it, if it's possable to get 8 litres from just 110g how thick would it be ?????

It's an industrial food thickener/binding agent. It's used mainly to give food such as salad cream consistency in recipes where glutens are to be avoided and quite often in shampoos (to stop ingredients separating). Basically a small amount of it in water will make a sort of slimy gunge. Because it's used in gluten free cookery, you'll probably be able to get it from a whole food shop.

I've no idea how it compares in price to methyl cellulose and nastrosol. Dunktankbabes will know more about this.

Buying in bulk it is a bit cheaper. The natrosol and methocell is easier to work with though. Our uncoloured Gunge is £11.99 for 24 litres including postage. That's for enough to make a good thick Gunge. I would probably want to use 150 to 200 grams of gum to make a bucket of Gunge where as it would be about 130 to 150 grams of natrosol.
The gum should be readily available in small quantities in supermarkets. Buying bulk wasn't so easy.

Dazuk - you can get a tube of 110g for around £2.40 from larger Supermarkets. The Free From/Gluten Free aisle in Tesco usually stocks in.

Slimed, I did some experiments with this a few months back - in the end, I figured you need to use around 1% of the powder. So, for arguments sake, 10g of powder would make a good, thick slime when added to 1 litre of water. 110g would be fine for a bucket (somewhere between 8 and 11 litres, depending how thick you want it).

If you're looking at a bath sized amount, you're probably looking at around 100 litres (possibly double, depending how deep you want it) - so about £25 worth of powder. I've not found anywhere to buy it in bulk, but you could pick up a few tubes in advance each time you go into Tesco.

It's a different type of gunge compared to Nastrasol - Xanthan tends to get thinner when poured, then thicken up again, whereas Nastrasol stays thick all the way through.

One final note - use a hand mixer for small quantities, or a drill with a paint stirrer attached for buckets or more, ALWAYS keep stirring, and add the powder in slowly. Otherwise it clumps up and won't thicken correctly.
