Was just wondering whether other people have noticed whether it be on here or YouTube and Twitter signs that a good few number of people seem to show signs of autism? It's more in the literal way people reply. Was just wondering if it's just me in thinking this. This maybe should be in the off topic so i apologiseI if so
Impossible to tell on limited evidence, but it's an interesting question. You can speculate about the desire to avoid eye contact and facial coverage in WAM, since the former is ostensibly one of the traits of people on the spectrum. But it is also a trait belonging to people who suffer extreme social anxiety. (Case in point: I'm not on the spectrum but I do get panic attacks, used to be agoraphobic, etc.)
Another symptom is the tendency to pick a subject or element and zone in on it with no sense of perspective.
At best WAM is a niche interest which 90% of the world aren't into. Towards the other extreme lies the sort of obsessive behaviour we sometimes find here and on video comments that defy any sense of self-awareness.
Well, let's say for the sake of argument that a number of these folks are to one degree or another autistic. We should keep in mind that correlation is not necessarily indicative of causation and this could happen not because of any appeal WAM has to people with autism but because there are so many autistic folks in the world and with the internet it would be surprising if your particular interest wasn't shared by a few of them no matter how niche.
As someone who does have autism (asbergers) these traits of not making eye contact, knowing a certain subject, etc, are correct. I'm classified as a high-functioning autistic. I do sometimes have social anxiety. I've never really had a desire to do a video, but I do love wam and a lot of its aspects.
If you read any internet forum, mainstream or otherwise, you will see many people exhibiting a lack of social skills and self awareness. It does seem that fetish people are more likely to obsessively post the same comments on youtube videos which may indeed be related to an autism spectrum disorder. In some cases though I feel like people get off on posting creepy/annoying things. It's hard to tell what really motivates some people but either way I don't think you can say for sure that someone is autistic based on internet comments.
