Just got one and enjoying the hell out of it, but it has its limitation on this site. I understand the issues with flash and not accessing the chat room, but has anyone had any success in posting pictures on the UMD from their own iPad?

What are you presented with when you try to upload pictures? I don't use any java, javascript, or flash here for uploading photos, so it should really just work. What does it do when you try? Oh, and where on UMD are you trying to add pictures?

Uh, that's probably because the iPad doesn't have a conventional or accessible file system, same as any other mobile device.

Your pictures are stored within the photo application... don't quote me, but I will bet it needs a piece of code available in the touch API to offer up photo's to a random web site.

I can't upload pictures from the iPad either. I got the same message so your not alone on that one.

To actually answer your question MM, the Choose File boxes are grayed out.

To make it happen you need to Call on a native application to assist. That needs an extra link in the code.

I know people have been using http://picupapp.com/ as a free app to use and take advantage from.

Not sure it would be a priority thing her, most people don't take pictures from an iPad as it's a little unwieldy, and on phones it's easy enough to upload some where and grab an embed link.

It's doable, but maybe a little hacky to do quickly. Maybe possible to call on the native photo app.

Here's another approach. iPad owners could ask themselves "why did I buy an overpriced pseudo-computer that doesn't even have a real goddamned file system instead of just buying a laptop?"

There is NO reason that the entire world should be expected to rewrite decades of functional, standards-compliant web code to accommodate a proprietary, non-computer device.

"Non-computer" is just wrong. Many computers do not even have file-systems. The iPad has a file-system but it is not exposed to the user in the conventional way. I'm not defending the iPad, nor am I suggesting that we rewrite web pages for any single device ... even though we did rewrite them for Internet Explorer ... but that is another matter. I'm just saying that you should not take such a narrow view of a computer. Not everyone wants to deal with the complexities of a traditional PC. I think the market has spoken. Apple's earnings reports just came out, yesterday.

For better or for worse, this is how things are going to go. Yes, we who run the interwebs will still be on these huge PC's, servers, and even traditional laptops. But the average person, it turns out, is usually just a consumer of content, and Apple is making products that serve that purpose very well, with very smooth and easy-to-use UIs. Like Jobs said, these big computers are going to be like trucks--they do all the heavy lifting when people like us need it in the industry or in a professional capacity. But computers in general are moving to be devices you don't have to think about in a technical sense.

When's the last time you worried about a file system in your car? I'm sure at least one of the many computer systems in modern cars has a file system in it. But we don't care about that, as long as the thing starts when we turn the key, the window rolls down when we hit the button, and the antilock brakes activate when we hit a patch of ice. It just works. A car, like computers of tomorrow, is a device to "get us there" in maximum comfort, style, and smoothness without making us think of the technology involved to make it happen. If you are a car nut who likes to change his own oil and do his own tune-ups, you'll be mad when all the engines are eventually sealed and factory maintenance only; just like us sysops and code junkies and linux nerds get all upset when an iPad doesn't have a file system in the UI. Yes it's dumbed down. But hey, the world is dumb, or at least unwilling to deal with computers in the traditional sense. The average consumer just wants to "get there in comfort" and that's what these new devices excel at.

It's amazing how seemingly intelligent people can jump to conclusions and not really read what was originally posted. Did I ask MessMaster to rewrite the underlying software to accommodate my iPad deficiencies? All I wanted to know was had anyone had any success in uploading pictures to the UMD from their iPad.

The question was answered very nicely by noise but as is the norm on the UMD of late, someone else has to pile on and tell us how much more superior they are then me with their choice of computing devices.

I bought an iPad for a lot of reasons, knowing full well that I would not be able to do everything I can with a laptop, desktop, netbook or other flash-enabled tablet devices. thanks for letting me know that I made the wrong choice with my purchase.

Because it suits a need, and I don't need to see the file system.




I wrote an article recently for a tech site about the fact we are still 30 years later using the metaphor of an office for the computer... it was used as a rather patronising way of giving people in offices a UI they could understand quickly.

Why do I need to understand a file system? If I don't need or want a car with a manual gearbox, I buy an auto. As MM said... I don't need to understand how a car works or see the engine on a car to drive it. Not everyone has the time or the inclination to tune, maintain and fix their car... same goes for computers (As it happens, I used to be a mechanic but screw that, I don't have the time).


Besides... I don't want to haul a laptop around everywhere that does shit I don't need on the move. Same as I have a Range Rover on my drive sitting next to a small compact car. When I need to drive into the desert I take the Range Rover... when I need to shoot round the corner I jump into the compact. The compact doesn't have adjustable suspension or a hunky V8 engine... it won't climb up and down hills in the badlands, it won't pull a loaded trailer across three states or drive through four foot of water or pull a tree out by it's roots... but it's overkill to pick up a pack of cigarettes from the store a few blocks away.

Stuff moves forwards, stuff moves sideways. The internet wasn't built to shift gigs and gigs of porn about; but it's all adapted. If anything porn pushed the internet forward. Next step in computers will be pretty much not needing to see the operating system...

Every last one of you has completely missed the point. The iPad does not have a file system. Several very established functions of the web REQUIRE a file system on the client device - the file upload dialog for example. The iPad is therefore NOT a fully standards-compliant web-capable device. It can handle a subset of traditional web capabilities, much like most smart phones have limits on the type of file formats they can process. Hell, some original smart phones didn't have copy & paste, even though that's one of the core functions of the 30+ year old computer operating systems that those phones were based on.

I don't care if the iPad is the greatest thing since cheese in a spray can. It's not a 100% web-capable device and people are going to run into this kind of thing until someone patches the OS to emulate a file system API. The way Apple stuff is locked down, I would expect that only Apple themselves are going to be able to provide that kind of low-level functionality. That will probably happen right around the same time they start supporting Flash.

BTW, Android devices all have real files systems and they can be mounted like an external hard drive on pretty much any computer. I suspect the Windows tablets and new phones will be the same if they ever see the light of day.

No thanks are necessary. It's my civic duty. Besides, deep down, you probably already knew as much when you discovered you couldn't do a simple web-based file upload with your $800 gadget.

Well, another point you made was that people should ask themselves why they bought an "overpriced pseudo-computer" with no filesystem, and that's what people were answering. The short but the honest answer is "it's glossy and smooth" and fun to use, filesystem be damned.

I don't think anybody here is arguing that the iPad and iPhone are 100% compatible with the standards of the web. I think it's fully understood by all of us that they are not. I think they are taking issue with the opinion that nobody should ever buy one just because isn't.

People are buying 10's of millions of these things for their ease of use and smooth UI's, and that intrinsic feel is winning people over, despite the obvious shortcomings. It's like a $1,000 watch that doesn't do shit but tell the time, whereas my Casio Databank from the '80's could run rings around it. But features and standards are not the point to these consumers; look and feel are.

Standards junkies can't wrap their heads around the fact that a lot of people value form more than function. They are right to be a little upset when a very popular device makes these problems ubiquitous. But what can we do? These devices have made Apple the world's second most profitable company. It's here, it's not going away, so we've just got to deal with it.

Ya know, whenever I see somebody sitting there using their droid, I cringe. I mean, I'm a big nuts-n-bolts kind of guy. I would swap my iPhone for the Droid's inarguably superior functionality in a second! But that crappy-ass user interface and glitchy scrolling are deal-breakers. Using the iPhone, for what it does do, is a sweet, sweet experience. And as much as I use it to check up on UMD while I'm away and do other browsing and web work, I haven't yet needed to upload a file with it. Not saying that I never will, but these shortcomings just aren't as huge as we web workers make it out to be. The bottom line is Blue Sushi is enjoying his iPad more than he would a laptop, and there are reasons for that.

I am a confirmed Apple head, I physically refuse to use Windows... I would rather smear dog shit in my use than use an operating system that insisted for what... 15+ years? That you go to the Start menu to turn it off.


I love watching someone using OSX for the first time... it takes quite a while to get out of the habit of sideways thinking about where something would be and getting in the habit of going WHERE it makes sense and SHOULD be. When you start to here the "Aaah, that's easy..." you know they are about to convert.

However, as an Apple head, I actually carry an EVO with the Cyanogen flavour of Android on it. For a phone, just grabbing it and performing a quick task like searching, doing a little email or hitting the free and awesome navigation is perfect.

I wouldn't say it's better than the iPhone, it just suits how I use a phone better.

iPad with a Google phone is the way forward for me.




As for uploading a picture to the to a website...


Why would I need to do that? It's not a work computer... I don't upload video and pictures to it. The camera isn't really for taking pretty pictures, it's for when you need a camera and it's at hand; or using to make video calls.

I have had mine since before Xmas and I have at no point wanted to upload pictures from it. It's just not a necessity.

The iPad is not a traditional computer, it doesn't need to be.
