Not really batter at all, it's corn starch (sometimes called corn flour) and water. A thick mixture like this will resist any quick movements, but slow movements will sink in.

Those were both great vids!!

But unfortunately, no one was willing to make the supreme sacrifice and sink all the way down. That would have been great to see!

If you watched the episode on BBCiplayer, the show begins with the 2 hosts FULLY submerged (to their shoulders) in the pool.
The female presenter was even wearing a blue dress, if I remember correctly
& the mixture seemed to actually move with them, which may suggest they mocked up the batter pool with something non-"non-newtonian" for that purpose.

A real shame nobody managed to capture that!
