5? How about supporting 2 first? You know, the 1995 version where they introduced form elements, including the FILE UPLOAD control. That's what this thread is about. Remember? Until Apple adds a real file system or whips up some kind of abstraction layer to fake one, the iPhone does not even support the bare minimum web standards from 17 years ago.
Stupid phones that aren't as good as capable as computers and laptops. Phones should be complicated, just like real computers!

None of the above has anything to do with this thread, but MY metal-chassis G1 gets about 48 hours of battery life and unlike Apple devices, I can swap out a low battery with a charged spare any time I want. Stuff that in your iPipe and smoke it.
I have a G1 sitting here, it definitely didn't have a metal chassis... it was an underpowered rushed out, ill thought out, panicked response to the iPhone over a year after it came out (G1 came out in 2008). It got left behind by HTC and the carriers pretty quick because it wasn't good enough after the second iteration of Android to run any further updates.
Android early adopters really got fucked over.
I know Android phones inside and out - I have owned them since the G1 and reviewed and written about them for a couple of websites. I went for them because I had high hopes, and have found Android to be nothing but disappointing, with the exception of the navigation which is superb AND free.
I don't want a file system on a phone - it's a phone. It needs to be quick and easy to use on the move. If you need a phone that you can change the battery on after 48 hours of use and file system that you can dig into, a laptop might be a better way to go.
If during a 48 hour period you don't sleep near an electrical socket... wow.
For the record... my EVO runs for two days with reasonable use, but that's because I have it rooted and running software that controls the CPU... because Android sucks ass at that - mainly because there is such fragmentation and so many models it will just bloat the O.S up Windows style.
Why are you so brain-dead about this? It absolutely doesn't matter what YOU think a phone should do. The subject of this thread is essentially the millions of people all over the world who are trying to use a smartphone as a computer, specifically for access to websites. That presents some fairly significant problems, especially for Apple device users.
- As we've already covered, a file system (or a reasonable emulation) is currently REQUIRED in order to support file input form controls.
- Browsers based on Apple's Webkit libraries have big problems handling standard download headers.
- Much to Apple's chagrin, there are still millions of older iPhones in use out there (they're a pretty sturdy phone) and thanks to their idiotic policy of not having removable flash storage, they become more and more obsolete for real-world usage as video file sizes grow ever larger. It doesn't take long to fill up a 4 gig phone when clips are a half a gig.
Additionally, javascript is a little flakey on all phone platforms and like it or not, Flash is a heavily used (even if obsolete) technology, as are Java applications.
The bottom line (on which we both agree) is that phones are not computer replacements and probably won't be for a few more iterations. Why do you insist on turning every tech discussion into some kind of psychotic pro-Apple Jihad? Apple products are every bit as flawed as every other platform and fail miserably in several key areas like web compatibility.
