That's a really good point, never occured to me.


I also always name ZIP files of pics... pics.zip which must cause annoyance.

I'm going to adopt file naming in public areas as a reminder as a standard, and change my image file habit.

This is a good idea I think.

I'm really starting to wonder how important a thing that is. More I think about it... the more hard drives with collections of videos that could do with an aid to identification there must be out there. It's now over ten years of internet video...

Or do people rename and catagorise in folders themselves?

I re-name my collection, sometimes making folders named by substance, so the mud videos wind up on one folder, slime in another, etc.

If I download a bikini pie fight video for example, and the file is called '542B5E89K.avi" I would likely re-name it to 'bikini_pie_fight.avi' so that I can make sense out of the file name, or locate the file should I wish to locate it at a later date.

I would love it if producers used a file name that reflected the actual content, and some actually do that. (My Marlicious video file names are basically the title of the video)

For years I've been naming my clips with the date they were shot so that I have something I can search for when trying to locate an old clip. They'll have other stuff in the name, but will always have a YYYY-MM-DD part for identification. It seems to work for me to keep them straight. I'm not sure if it works as well for my customers.

This is a really great idea, and I thank wtfdownloads for attempting to make my life a little easier. I do tend to rename my videos as well, to something along the lines of "Modelname Substance". But, I think having the original name on the video's page would still be very useful.

My original message spoke to customers, not producers.

The title is "Producers, please list filenames on your site!" How was that aimed at customers?

True. I changed the phrasing half way through writing the message to target customers, but to go back and edit the title.

The tone of the post was from a customers point of view, and was in fact written from a customer turned producers point of view.

Now all I'm going to know is if producers who work with a lot of files anyway think it's a good idea, and not the consumers who actually download and collect the videos to watch at leisure.

Please move it back. I know I would like to know if it would benefit the majority of consumers by me going to the time and trouble to alter my workflow and website. I'm sure a lot of other producers would benefit from the customer feedback as well.
