I've just finished editing my first video, to be uploaded to the UMD Download store soon, and I was wondering what people's opinions on file sizes are.
I know that storage is cheap and most people have a decent broadband connection but I saw a 900MB download (on UMD) for less than 10 minutes I think.

I work on the standard DVD ratio so that's 4.7 GB to 120 minutes, and my video is 9 minutes totalling 300MB. Probably a little too big but does anyone have an comments?

Hey CKN, that is actually a fairly common size but one thing you can do, as many other producers do also is offer it in different sizes and formats IE: HD, SD, Ipod. You will need to upload all the individual files to your bin first so you asign all the files to one download that way anyone buying your clip can choose which format to download.

900MB for a 10 minute video is way too big IMO. Some of the videos on the download store could use a little bit more squeezing, and some will be subject to being re-rendered some day when I get time. I'll be contacting producers and figuring out what can be done. UMD can be programmed to do it automatically, but I'm going to approach it pragmatically.

Just make sure you're getting the file size of your videos down as much as possible while still having clear quality.

I edit in DV mode (similar to DVD in size / resolution I think?), and the DV format edited files are enormous - just a shade under 3 gig for a 13 minute long scene with two brides gunging each other last week.

I then use the DivX codec to compress the video for publication - which drops that same 13 minute scene to under 150MB. Which not only saves server space, but means that customers downloading the video don't have to wait so long for it to come down.

The UMD handles DivX video fine, and it's playable across a lot of platforms.

We moved to MPG4 2 years ago for this very reason. A 20 min video in 16x9 and hi-def is less than 300MB....

Trouble is Phil MPG4 editing is not cheap unless you already have a MAC.
